Freeman Hospital was opened in 1977 and is situated in the east end of the City. It became a part of the Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust by merging with the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Associated Hospitals NHS Trust on 1st April 1998. The Trust, which has consistently been awarded Top 40 Hospital status by CHKS, three stars and Improving Working Lives ‘Practice Plus’ status, is classified as a teaching hospital because of its close association with the University of Newcastle upon Tyne Medical School. It is one of the largest in the country employing approximately 11,000 staff with a Revenue Budget in excess of £570 million per annum.

The range of services within it includes General and Respiratory Medicine: Cardiology: Renal Services: Otolaryngology: Urology: General Surgery: Cardiothoracic Surgery: Heart and Lung Transplantation: Liver Transplantation: Elective Orthopaedics and Rheumatology: Care of the Elderly. Some of the services provided are as National/ Regional Centres
